The killer approaches ominously, but ends up, filling Dewey's biscuit bowl, petting him and leaving without harming him in any way. Dewey is shown enjoying his meal as his owner lies dead in the background.
The director of the film, Eli Roth, has commented in interviews that this was an intentional decision as he, too, hates the animal violence trope that is still fairly popular in horror movies.
